11 Reasons Why We Should Stop Eating Genetically Modified Foods

If you haven’t paid attention to what you’re eating, chances are you are eating Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Despite the many protests and petitions, the U.S. has yet to pass any federal regulations on labeling GMO foods. This means that GM companies don’t feel the need to disclose if their product contains GMOs.

So what’s a big deal? Here are eleven reasons why we should stop eating genetically modified foods.

1. GM Foods Doesn’t Increase Yield Potential

Despite the said promises, GM has yet to make any effort in increasing the yield potential of commercialized crops. Additionally, GM crops have suffered from yield reduction.

2. GM Crops Increases the Use of Pesticide

According to the U.S. government data, GM crops have increased the overall use of a pesticide when compared to conventional crops.

3. GM Foods Won’t Solve the Food Crisis

It was concluded in a 2008 report that the increase in biofuel production is the leading cause of the increase in food prices. Monsanto has been the core of lobbying for biofuels while profiting from the food crisis to promote GM foods.

4. There are Safer Ways to Feed Hunger

A UN-sponsored report involved nearly 400 scientists have concluded that GM crops have very little to offer agriculture and the changes of hunger. This is because better alternatives to growing crops are available.

5. There are More Successful Farm Technologies

Other forms of pest management and organic methods have been proven to be highly effective without affecting the crops.

6. GMOS are fed to Animals without Consumers’ consent

Animals raised on the millions are fed with imported GM feed. This means that dairy products, eggs, and meat are left unlabeled. Studies also show the increase of health conditions in the animals.

7. GMOs are extremely bad for you

GM products have been through minimal research and testing for humans. But several tests on animals have revealed adverse health effects. Most recently, a study verified that Glyphosate, which is a substance that used in most pesticides can cause congenital disabilities. Another study proved that the Roundup had promoted the sterility in male rats – leading us to a question, perhaps this may be the reason for the massive international decline in male fertility?

During a study in 2010, hamsters were fed GM soy for a period of 24 months and over three generations. Hamsters that followed the GM diet showed devastating results that most had lost the ability to have babies while suffering a high rate of mortality and slower growth.

8. GMOs destroy the environment

With the repetition use for single-crop agriculture, this has resulted in dead soil that requires large amounts of chemical fertilizer and pesticides to continue production. These massive doses are applied then leached into waterways – ultimately polluting everything in its path.

This phenomenon was help responsible for the Gulf Dead Zone. Furthermore, the base of the industrial agriculture is now being led by GM crops. From farming to delivery for consumption, our food system has become increasingly dependent on oil. In short, food innovation had destroyed the environment.

9. GMOs contain genetic contamination with unpredictable consequences

The science of release a different genetic mutation can lead to unpredictable consequences. The method has also been compared to tragic results of releases species that isn’t used to varied territories. In fact, GMOs are not natural to any region in general. The issue with GMOs is the aggressive cross-contamination against organic plants which has caused immeasurable damage.

Unapproved GMO rice that was grown during one year trials was found that GMO have caused contamination of the rice supply in the entire US. This has caused the drastic loss in organic cultivations – which has made their theory of coexistence impossible to consider.

10. GM companies have a monopoly over food production

In America, more than 90% of soy fields are said to include the use of Monsanto GMOs. In 1996, only two percent of soybeans contained their gene while over 90% contained Monsanto’s GMO gene by 2008. Since then more soy producers all over the world are reported to have 98% GMO soy.

The government of the United States has also been found to have funded the research and developing the GMO products. The patenting food is the growing monopoly of playing with nature and its frightening health effects. As citizens, we must break the monopoly and support local farms.

11. GMO Destroys Farms and their Team

Aside from the cross- contamination method that has caused destruction in organic farming, GMO farmers are actually not doing any better as they are considered to be sharecroppers for GMO companies. Every year, GMO farmers are at the begging point for fertilizer, seeds, pesticides and more.
