Good Bye, Lenin

The last statue of Francisco Franco, the Spanish dictator, was taken down yesterday in Santander.

To celebrate it, Foreign Policy blog made a worth-a-visit list of other important statues topplings. I chose Lenin for the title and image of this post just because it would allow me to suggest a great film for you to see during the holidays.

Cheers to british laws

by vidhi on December 17, 2008 at 7:42 pm

The UK seems to be keeping up with its history of spectacular legislation with its newest proposal to curbe binge drinking. The parliament has proposed a law banning all happy hours, pub crawls, and ‘all you can drink’ offers, so that their citizens can behave themselves.

Nice way to battle the financial crisis!

Google v/s the flu

by vidhi on December 16, 2008 at 7:30 pm

In the ever-raging battle between man and nature, mankind has now decided to pull out its strongest weapon - Google. With Flu Trends, the website now uses its Google Trends software to track the flu as it spreads across different states. It compiles this data based on how many people run searches for flu related terms in that particular city.

Take a look at how it works. Makes the flu seem almost poetic.

Shoes forbidden in press conferences

by barbara on December 16, 2008 at 11:49 am

So an Iraqi reporter throws both his shoes at president Bush.

It would be just a (really) funny piece of news but, if the Bush administration has the time to deal with it just like they’ve dealt with other “threats”, we should expect an urgent prohibition of shoes during press conferences.

P.S.: You might not get the chance to throw your shoes at Bush, but you can join the movement and send them to the White House (ok, it’s not as thrilling but it’s definitely a good joke!)

Water level rising

by barbara on December 15, 2008 at 7:53 pm

placa-50-graus.jpg I confess: I find it rather charming to see Venice flooded every now and then at this time of the year.

But when I know it’s the cities in Brazil getting flooded I can only be upset and worried. That’s why I loved this new project from the guys of 50Graus spreading signs around Sao Paulo to warn my fellow citizens about the rising level of oceans and rivers due to human actions.

See me art

by phoebe on December 13, 2008 at 8:00 pm

see-me.jpg

Tonight cocluded a free, three day exhibition organised by Luton Churches Education Trust (LCET). Featuring impressive art work of 9 teenagers in the Luton care , the exhibition enabled these children to show what it is like for them to be in care. With street installations, self portraits and interactive exhibits, each one of them sought to express their frustrations, fears, worries and insecurities. A brilliant move from the rehashed teen reality television shows if you ask me.
