If you find your best friend’s phone calls unbearably boring. If you don’t know what to say to your mum during your once-a-week phone conversation. If you think your nighttime chats with your partner aren’t deep enough. Then start calling your favourite plant, a friend who knows how to listen in silence. Botanicalls is a system that allows you to call your plants or to be called by them. It’s made of a sensor that, placed inside the plant’s pot, recognizes when the soil is too dry or too wet and gives you a buzz, just to remind you that it’s time to intervene. The plant can even call you to say thanks for the last watering. And you are even able to call your plant, just to check if everything is ok and learn more about it. The Botanicalls system has been developed in the United States and uses Asterisk, an open-source telephone system. In the developers’ words, the main goals of the project is “to facilitate plant-human communication, to remind humans of their connection to the natural world, and to keep the plants alive”. Who knows, maybe the best remedy for your never-ending loneliness is a good phone call with your Geranium.
