Kill the rabbit to save the legacy

rabbitmurder.jpgRobben Island museum in South Africa is closed this week to rid the historically important place of a rabbit infestation.

Nelson Mandela, Nobel Peace Prize winner, sacrificed 27 years of his life on the island’s prison as part of the South African struggle for freedom and democracy. Today, the island’s museum is a popular tourist attraction.

However, this week the museum is closed to kills its rabbit invaders to protect the “plant life and historical buildings”, museum authorities said.

The original Reuters report says the culling will be followed by a sterilization program to sustain a small, manageable rabbit population.

History may lay the blueprint of the present and must be protected but does this justify destroying life?
