On the estancia

More than a simple ranch, the estancia is a large estate originally devoted to animal-rearing and providing all of life’s necessities: bakeries, infirmaries, schools. The development of the estancias, especially after the end of the 1800s, modified the Argentine-Patagonian landscape, taking it in the direction of more intensive and commercial forms of production. Today most of the estancias continue to be farms dedicated to agriculture and the rearing of animals, even though many of them have opened to tourists.

Some of them still conserve traces of their Golden Age, when mansions with luxurious decorations in French, English or colonial styles were built. Others are more simple and integrated into their bare surroundings and the fields. Life in the estancias still preserves strong ties with tradition: for this reason their owners are usually very hospitable.
But the advent of the estancia has above all transformed the figure of the gaucho, who has become the main protagonist of this new rural way of life.
