Lands, global stories of conflict and restitution

Ten years ago a group of experts from the United Nations prepared a draft of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to establish minimum global standards for the protection of these communities. The aim was to approve the Declaration at the UN general assembly during the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People. But the decade came and went and the Declaration has not yet been approved and so a new United Nations International Decade in favor of indigenous people has been launched. The document-draft, still waiting to be approved, asks countries to respect, protect and promote the rights of indigenous peoples to control their lives and their futures while at the same time preserving their unique cultures and life styles. Although there has been much progress over the last few years many indigenous communities still live in marginalized and disadvantaged conditions.

The conflicts between these groups and their respective governments have mostly been over land ownership and the maintaining of a hereditary culture. In some cases they have gotten close to resolution despite the many challenges and problems.
In this space we want to broaden the rest of the world’s outlook on these peoples, paying special attention to stories of conflict and/or resolution over land.
