Mapuche Kimun

Space, time, land, medicine: but also the sun, stars, music. Talking about another culture is never easy. You can start from a concept of the world, which in the case of the Mapuche is strongly tied to nature and religion. And a little seriously and a little playfully try to speak Mapudungun,
the Mapuche language. Or listen to legends and songs.

Without presuming to substitute their voice – that on the Internet is present, strong and varied – we offer some descriptions of the Mapuche world and culture (kimun, in their language: hence the name of the section). Let’s consider them windows on an unknown landscape. Or just evocative cues. In any case it’s a way to get closer and find out more. And later perhaps dig a little deeper.

The Mapuche people see things in a different way from Western culture beginning with those basic concepts that we live and breath from infancy, that are taught at school that rule daily life, work, home, community and our relationship with nature. We will try to suggest some “visions” of this “other” world also through some animations created by members of this group. The myth of mankind’s origins from the darkness of time has reached the Internet.

On the page Mapuche kimun there are some hints of the world vision of this people. In Domo and Lituche and Kai Kai and Tren Tren you can find out more about this culture’s myths of origin– the creation of the Mapuche and the universal flood, with the dispute between the serpents of the water and the land Kai Kai and Tren Tren – by watching two animations.

Kai Kai and Tren Tren – The serpents of the water and of the land

A Mapuche myth about the universal flood and the battle between the serpents of the water and the land told through animation.
In fact the legend says that one day the powerful sea serpent Kai Kai ordered the water to take over the land. But it found the opposition of Tren Tren, the land serpent, who protected the people from the fury of his enemy by telling them to take refuge on the mountains. In the end the people made a sacrifice to calm Kai Kai, the waters retreated and the survivors once again populated the earth.

Domo e Lituche
Domo and Lituche, or woman and man. The creation of the Mapuche world told through animation.
The legend states that man, Lituche, was created first and then woman, Domo, was made from a star. And to make the ground she walked on more comfortable, grass and flowers were created too…
