Legends
“Primitive man, immersed in a nature that was often hostile, attempted to explain to himself natural phenomena and surrounding life with allegorical stories. That is how myths and legends were born and they marked the beginning of a religious disposition. To understand people it is important to look back and dig into the remote past”. (From the “El Mundo de Amando”, legends from Tierra del Fuego, Lucía Gevert)
For cultures that are mainly oral like indigenous ones, legends are an important means to relive and pass on their identity. These are living stories that are ritualized each time though the telling, they create community. To outsiders they bear an extraordinary resemblance to “founding myths” of other peoples, while still maintaining unique characteristics.
In this section we present a sample of indigenous legends from Argentina. Every people have their own: Mapuche, Guaranì, Toba, Tehuelche…Many of these explain the creation of the indigenous world.
