Kai Kai and Tren Tren – The serpents of the water and the earth
The great battle between Kai Kai and Tren Tren Vilu, the serpent of the water and the serpent the land, a Mapuche myth about the universal flood
The ancients say that one day, the powerful sea serpent by the name of Kai Kai, ordered the waters to invade the land. But when the water started to rise the serpent of the land, Tren Tren, began an attack against her enemy. While Kai Kai angrily chased people, Tren Tren ordered them to run to the hills to save themselves.
In the middle of the intense battle the hillside kept rising, rescuing the Mapuche which were holding onto the peaks. Those who couldn’t escape were engulfed by the water and turned into fish and wolves, marking the origin of the lineages with marine names. The survivors got so close to the sun, that they had to protect their heads with the wooden plates they used to carry their food.
For a long time the two serpents battled until Tren Tren asked the people to make a sacrifice to calm the fury of Kai Kai after which, finally, the waters receded. And the Mapuche returned to inhabit the land.
