The Eco-Warrior Award

Ken Saro-Kiwa, a Nigerian poet executed by the military regime on a pretext to suppress his battles on behalf of the Ogoni, the indigenous people of the Niger delta.

Rodolfo Montiel Flores, a Mexican farmer involved in a peaceful struggle to save the Sierra del Petatlàn woodland from the relentless illegal timber trade.

Yu Xiaogang, a Chinese environmentalist who managed to block the construction of thirteen dams on the Nu river and the destruction of Lake Lashi. An abusive development project which would cause inestimable damage to the eco-system and the local population.

These are some of the winners of the Goldman International Prize.

Called the Green Nobel, since 1990 this award has been given every April in conjunction with Earth Day to six environmental activists chosen from 150 ecologists by an international jury. These are the heroes whose names have not meant that much to us until now, who fight in the shadows for the ‘underclass,’ mixing environmental protection with initiatives for sustainable development. The recognition, worth 125,000 dollars, was founded by a Californian businessman Richard Goldman.
