Technology for the Planet
Recognition for research projects involving the environment and ecological emergencies. This is the idea that inspired promoters of the prize John and Alice Tyler in 1973.
This year 200,000 dollars will be given to Professor Gatze Lettinga, the inventor of a more efficient technology for the anaerobic treatment of sewage disposal: non-oxygen dependent bacteria are used in the purification of the sewage water to convert the pollutants.
Lettinga has given up the patent for his invention, known as UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) , making it available to all, most of all the 2.8 billion people living in water-scarce areas today, and 3,800 children who die each day from lack of clean drinking water and sanitation (source UNDP report 2006).
