Eco-Labels
Buying green is a praiseworthy action, but it’s not always easy to know what’s what and decipher the labels of those products and services that appear to be environmentally-friendly. A vehicle, a light bulb, paper, building materials… they are considered eco-friendly if they meet the criteria of the 4-S rule: Satisfaction - they must satisfy the customers’ requirements. Sustainability - in terms of the consumption of natural resources. Social acceptability - of both the company and its products. Safety - of the product.
With over 50 logos varying in age between 2 and 15 years , awarded by government bodies, private organisations or a mixture, with voluntary membership or not, and applying evaluation criteria that are not always comparable, the European market has an extremely complex system of environmental labelling. Here is a brief summary of the main ones.
